Umpqua Gem and Mineral Club - Lapidary Workshop

UGMC - Lapidary Workshop

UGMC members have access to use the lapidary workshop where they take rough mineral specimens and work them with several kinds of equipment to create display pieces, sculptures and jewelry.

Workshop Location - Roseburg, OR. 97470

Hours Open Sunday - 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Hours Open Saturday - 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Rock Saws

We have four saws for rock cutting and a smaller trim saw for slab trimming that can be used by members for a modest fee. Each saw has a blade with diamond dust in it to cut through the stones. Our biggest saw is an 18 inch Highland Park, and is capable of cutting an __ inch rock. We also have a 14 inch Highland Park saw. Our smallest saw is a Highland Park trim saw, used for trimming stone slabs, and it has a 10 inch blade.

Jewelry Making

We start by cutting a large rock into thin slabs. These slabs are then cut by a smaller saw where it is trimmed to size. This shape cam be just about anything, or just a free-form shape that compliments the beauty of the stone. From there, they are taken to the grinding wheels (Genies) where they are shaped and polished.

Genies

Genies are grinding and polishing machines that allow a person to shape and polish a trimmed slab of rock. These machines consist of 3 grinding and 3 polishing wheels. All workshop machines, saws, grinding wheels, and drills are available to the UGMC membership once they have taken the orientation class on how to use each one.

Mineral and Equipment Sales

The workshop has quite a selection of mineral for sale. As a membership benefit, UGMC members get discounts on certain materials.

A ton of rough rock is available, you can choose from petrified wood, agate, jasper, obsidian, and thunder-eggs. Much of this material is also available as slabs in the workshop.

We have lapidary supplies available for sale, including grits, oils, polishing media and more. If you want new or used equipment, we can assist you. We often have used equipment available for sale. If you’re interested in selling your equipment, we may be able to assist on a consignment basis. Contact the workshop manager for more information.
