Umpqua Gem and Mineral Club - Philanthropy
About Us
The Umpqua Gem & Mineral Club donates new gem, mineral, and geology books to public schools in Douglas County, Oregon. Each school receives age-appropriate, new books on a four-year rotating schedule.
In 2026, the Umpqua Gem & Mineral Club is expanding its philanthropic mission, with the creation of a Scholarship Fund. The Scholarship Fund is for high school students who will be attending College and want to pursue studies of the Earth Sciences - Geology, Paleontology, Volcanology, etc.
The Umpqua Gem & Mineral Club is partnering with the Phoenix School of Roseburg, which will be hosting the clubs workshop trailer. The workshop will be used during the week to help support the After School Program. Students of the Phoenix School will be able to learn about rocks, and the lapidary equipment used to create jewelry. Students will have hands on learning and safety training on the proper use of rock saws and lapidary equipment. Students will learn about how to cut rocks into slabs, and how to trim and polish those slabs - turning them into cabochons, which can be turned into jewelry and other works of art. They will be learning about rocks and geology in the process, and that's when the adventure and fun begins!
Our club members are very diverse and talented, for example: We have many veterans in our ranks, several retired teachers, a couple of geologists, many jewelry creators, artisans, and small business owners. We also have some members who are affiliated with the Douglas County Master Gardener Association, and some are food service oriented. The possibilities are endless, and this partnership has the potential to transform the lives of the children and residents of Roseburg and Douglas County.

Books for Schools Fund
The Umpqua Gem & Mineral Club raises funds to purchase new gem, mineral, and geology books. The club then donates the books to public schools in Douglas County, Oregon. Each school receives age-appropriate, new books on a four-year rotating schedule.

Building Fund
We are working to get our club into a building of our own. This building will allow all club equipment and physical property to be consolidated under one roof. Future home of our workshop, museum, meeting place, and community hub.
